Museum of local history Meerane

Exhibition, tradition and town history

The Exhibition: The Museum of local history Meerane (Heimatmuseum Meerane) is located in the beautiful, fully reconstructed Alten Rathaus (old city hall) at the marketplace. All exhibition rooms can be found upper floor and in the attic of the building, which was originally constructed in 1727 in renaissance style.

Visitors can come and see a permanent exhibition on local history from pre- and protohistory until the end of World War II in 1945, plus broad information on the traditional weaving of the "Meeraner Schotten" (Scots of Meerane). Amongst others remind a traditional handloom as well as a mechanic loom the guest of the long tradition of textile industry in Meerane.

History: The collections of the museum originate mainly from the Gewerbeverein zu Meerane (local chamber of commerce), founded in 1863. They established the museum of commerce in 1888 in the former Dietrichstift, Altmarkt 15. In the year 1939 the museum ended up in civic possession. After the collections were relocated to the city hall in 1954, they were re-opened in 1957. The current exhibition was re-designed in 1992, after being closed for 14 years.
